What is "Global Education" ?



There are many definitions of global education.

The Maastricht global education declaration (2002) states:

  • Global education is education that opens people’s eyes and minds to the realities of the globalised world and awakens them to bring about a world of greater justice, equity and Human Rights for all.

  • Global education is understood to encompass Development Education, Human Rights Education, Education for Sustainability, Education for Peace and Conflict Prevention and Intercultural & Interfaith Education; being the global dimension of Education for Citizenship.

School UP Founders
Gloria Mika

Born and raised in Libreville, Gabon, she had the opportunity to travel and live in different continents and feels like a global citizen from a very early age. She graduated in Communication at the American College of Greece, while pursuing her career as a Fashion Model; she worked for brands such as Escada, Givenchy, Ungaro, Diesel, L'Oréal and is also the protagonist in Wyclef Jean "Sweetest Girl" video. As a Human Rights activist she was dedicated to the historical election in Gabon (2009) advocating for a Democratic, free and fair electoral process via her movement the Guardian Angels of Gabon. Her passion for ethics and education led to the creation of School UP to address the importance of educational content. She deeply cares about youth active participation in society as she believes they have a lot to offer. She is actively involved in other NGOs, namely ADYNE - African Diaspora Youth Network in Europe and Generation 2.0.

Nikos Safaris

Born and raised in Amaliada, Greece, Nikos studied at the University Paris IV in France and at C.E.F.T.P. His leadership and dedication for his work at the library of his hometown were noticed and appreciated by "Future Library" organization, where Nikos also organizes educational programs for children, with nearly 70 volunteers. He believes in human power of will to cjange society and his passion for the right to education for all led him to launch his own big project  "Philotechnique", which offers a wide range of general education courses to adults. His concern for Human Rights issues and the content of what education in schools should be about led him to meet with Gloria and be the co-founder of School UP. Nikos often participates in conferences in universities and Institutes to discuss various topics such as volunteering, leadershp and more.
